Winters is the time when we all get the sniffles. With drop in temperatures, we all crave for some warm and cozy meals. Food plays a very important role in keeping us healthy during the winter months. It also is the cause and cure of most diseases occurring to us. Here are the most common and famous recipes, you might find in every Indian kitchen that will help you keep you and your family warm and fuzzy.
- Masala Chai : Also known as spiced tea, this is a healthier version of the normal tea. Filled with the goodness of spices like : cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, tulsi and black pepper (in powder form) masala tea is a staple drink found in almost every household from Northern India. The spices help in soothing away any kind of flu, cold or cough thereby keeping the throat and nasal passage safe and secure.
- Soups : Be it an Indian version of the chinese soups like: Hot and Sour, Lung-Fung, a simple sweet corn soup, vegetable soup, mushroom soup or tomato soup, they all are filled with the goodness of vegetables that we generally hate to have. If you’re struggling to get up from your warm blanket, this is one of the easiest and simplest forms of meal found in the Indian kitchens. Soups provide us with a lot of nutrition of different vegetables altogether in one meal. It can be paired up with some garlic bread, soup sticks or grilled sandwiches as excellent sides.
- Gobhi Parantha : Well, I am a big cauliflower fan and being one of the best of vegetables available during winters, a chapatti stuffed with grated cauliflowers, onions, ginger and green chillies thereby cooked with a generous amount of ghee or butter is one of the most famous and sumptuously cooked breakfast in almost every Indian household. The goodness of butter or ghee prevents the skin from drying out and this is generally served along with curd,pickle, mint sauce or butter.
- Sarson ka Saag : One of the quintessential Punjabi dishes, enjoyed by Punjabis or non Punjabis alike, this dish contains a healthy dose of spinach, onions, tomatoes, ground spices/garam masala, ginger, garlic and green chillies thereby cooked with a generous amount of ghee. Mustard greens or Sarson leaves provide us with the necessary antioxidants, detox our bodies and maintain our heart health. This dish is authentically served along with ‘Makki ki roti’ or cornbread, grated radish, some home-made white butter and jaggery and is a delicacy devoured for it’s simple goodness.
- Gajar ka Halwa : The tempting traditional dessert made from carrots, milk, jaggery and dry fruits is the bestest part of winters. Grating the red juicy carrots and cooking them in some milk, khoya (reduced milk) with some amount of jaggery and lots of dry fruits added in them makes it one of the most delicious and wanted desserts in winters. The goodness of dry fruits keeps our bodies warm whereas carrots provide us with the necessary amount of vitamins, minerals and fibre in our bodies. Also jaggery helps in clearing off any congestion and helps the body produce heat and fight away any diseases.
